Clinical Overview

Introduction

Evidence-Based Care
DHA-Licensed Clinic
Conservative Therapy
Joint pain is one of the most common reasons people visit a clinic in Dubai. Many people try rest, painkillers or home remedies for weeks before having the joint checked, and a problem that was easy to manage can become long-standing.
Joint pain rarely has a single cause. A stiff knee may come from early osteoarthritis, an old ligament injury or simple overuse. Pain felt in the hip or shoulder can even start in the back or neck. Finding the cause first decides which treatment will help.
At RamaCare in Jumeirah 1, the physiotherapist examines the joint, and the GP can add blood tests or an X-ray in the same visit if they are needed. Your treatment plan is then built around your diagnosis, age and activity level.

What Is Joint Pain?

A joint is where two or more bones meet. Healthy movement depends on several structures working together:

Pain on stairs, swelling or a knee that gives way. See knee pain treatment.

The assessment checks how the joint moves and what is limiting it.

Joint Anatomy

Cartilage cushions the ends of the bones, ligaments hold the bones together, tendons connect muscles to bone, and synovial fluid lubricates the joint. Pain can come from any of these, or from the muscles around the joint.

Acute vs. Chronic Joint Pain

Acute joint pain starts suddenly, often after an injury, and usually settles within a few weeks with the right care. Chronic joint pain lasts more than three months and often points to osteoarthritis, an old injury that never fully healed, or an inflammatory condition.

Is It the Joint or Something Else?

Not all pain around a joint comes from the joint itself. Hip pain can start in the lower back, and shoulder pain can start in the neck. This is why the assessment checks the joints above and below the painful area.

Symptoms of Joint Pain

Joint problems don't always show up in the same way. Common symptoms include:
If a joint is swollen, warm and stiff for more than an hour in the morning, the cause may be inflammatory. Our GP can arrange blood tests to check.

Tick any symptoms that apply to you to see when to book an assessment.

Causes of Joint Pain

Joint pain has many possible causes, and the cause shapes the treatment plan:

1

Osteoarthritis

Gradual wear of the cartilage, common with age. See arthritis treatment.

2

Rheumatoid arthritis

An autoimmune condition that inflames the joints.

3

Gout

Uric acid crystals that cause sudden, painful swelling, often in the big toe.

4

Sports injuries

Sprains, strains and impact injuries from activity.

5

Ligament injuries

Sprains or tears that affect joint stability.

6

Tendon problems

Irritation or overload where the muscle meets the bone.

7

Overuse and repetitive strain

Repeated movements at work, in sport or at home.

8

Extra body weight

More load on the knees, hips and ankles.

9

Posture and desk work

Uneven loading of the joints over months or years.

10

Trauma

Falls, accidents or direct impact.

11

Infection

A rare but urgent cause, usually with fever and a hot, red joint.

Risk Factors

Some factors make joint problems more likely:

1

Age

Cartilage wear increases with age.

2

Sport and high activity

Repeated loading and impact raise injury risk.

3

Office work

Long hours sitting and poor workstation set-up.

4

Extra weight

More stress on the knees, hips and ankles.

5

Diabetes

Linked to joint stiffness, especially in the shoulder.

6

Previous injuries

Injuries that were not fully rehabilitated often return.

7

Inactivity

Weak muscles give the joint less support.

8

Heavy lifting

Poor technique strains joints and tendons.

9

Family history

Some types of arthritis run in families.

When Should You See a Doctor?

A hot, swollen joint with fever can mean a joint infection and needs urgent medical care, not physiotherapy alone. Go to an emergency department if you cannot be seen the same day.

Key Assessment Indicators
•A hot, red, swollen joint with fever (seek care the same day)
•Sudden severe swelling after an injury
•You cannot put weight on the leg or move the joint
•A visible change in the shape of the joint
•Pain that does not improve with rest
•Stiffness that keeps getting worse
•Pain lasting more than a few weeks

How We Diagnose Joint Pain at RamaCare

Your assessment in Jumeirah 1 usually includes:

1

Medical history

When the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and past injuries.

2

Physical examination

Checking swelling, tenderness and joint alignment.

3

Movement and strength tests

Range of motion, muscle strength and joint stability.

4

Walking and function check

How the pain affects walking, stairs and daily tasks.

5

X-ray in the clinic

Shows bone changes and narrowing of the joint space, done at RamaCare when needed.

6

Blood tests through our GP

Can check for gout, inflammation or vitamin deficiencies when an underlying cause is suspected.

7

MRI or CT by referral

If soft tissue or detailed bone imaging is needed, we refer you to an imaging centre.

8

Specialist referral

RamaCare does not have an orthopaedic surgeon. If you need injections or surgery, we refer you to an orthopaedic or rheumatology specialist.

The results guide a treatment plan that fits your diagnosis, not a standard package.
